all icons dissapeared from screen

    I am a newbie at using forums but not using or working with computers so if I do something stupid which I normally do please excuse me.

    I have been helping a buddy this afternoon with his computer getting rid all of this porn from the sites he visited like everyone does when they first get a computer. I thought I had everything working great. Porn was gone, popups stopped, and it seemed all was well. I loaded Spybot, Adware, and a program called something like Windows Auto Clear. Ran config.sys and got rid of numerous programs that were loading at startup. Even worked with Task Manager. All was well and computer was as fast as when he first got it. Then all of a sudden all the screen icons started going off then coming back on for a second or two then disappeared again, the reappeared, then totally disappeared for good. I taught myself computers on a system that did not have a hard drive but had only two 5.25" floppies. I learned DOS and became a DOS expert. But this has me totally confused.

    I'm not sure what you are talking about. You don't run config.sys. It was a file used by older Windows versions and was automatically loaded by the system at startup. So what are you talking about. Is this an old out dated OS (like Win 95, Win98, or ME)?

    What programs?

    So now I have to repeat my previous question, what exactly did you delete/changed.

    We need a lot more information than what you provided. If you still suspect malware problems, then please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, renaming, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.​
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy. - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
    NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

    Using XP Home Edition and found out to solve the problem. I told him if he ever went to another porn site again I was going to either shoot him or his computer.

    I know we all have been there when we first started. At least I did. Had to see what was out there. I hope some of yall did as well. Hate to think I and my friend are the only weird geeks using the internet.

    Sincere thanks for all the replys and help. As I mentioned I am a newbie at using forums and this was a huge help and learning experience. If I make a mistake or foul up somehow please excuse me and let me know what I did wrong.

    While I'm here what are you pros opinions of a simple but complete audio and video editing sofware program. I have been using Roxio for audio for sometime while making friends shag music cds. OK, shag music is what we in the southeast also call beach music. It is old R&B music that we do a dance to called the shag. If you've never seen it, it can be found on YouTube.

    I have over 15,000 shag or beach music songs on an external hard drive. Been collecting music for quite some time. Have a good collection of 30s, 40s, 50s' music. Big band, jazz, R&B, do wop, some Broadway but no country, nor opera, nor rap. Also have a good collection of old radio shows. So if anyone is looking for a hard to find song just let me know and if I have it I will be glad to send it to you and if I don't have it I know a friend who probably does.

    Since I've been using audio editing software I'm confortable learning any new program but I've just started playing with video. Any suggestions are welcome.

I was just telling you the appropriate forum to post your question in since this is the Malware Forum and running audio and video editing sofware programs is not a topic for the malware forum. More help can be obtained in the proper forum which is the Software Forum. Also I was just letting you know about one of our policies so that you can avoid running in to problems here by violating policies.
