I have a Dell Laptop running Windows XP. My normal security is Norton Internet Security (firewall, virus, spyware) and Spyware Terminator. One day both programs started going off with notices about attacks and items blocked. At this time, I also noticed that I had no Control panel and restricted access to stuff like changing the time and add and remove programs. I followed all the steps in the read me first.

I used AVG anti-spyware during the safe mode step in both the ADMIN and my normal login. I had all the items checked per the instructions but at the end of the scan, it said that no logs were saved. That software did find a bunch of items in both the ADMIN and normal logins. CCcleaner and Spybot worked just fine.

On the step that uses the online scanners, I was unable to connect to the internet in safe mode with networking so those scans were done in normal boot mode. All other steps performed per the instructions including the toggle of system restore. Logs will follow in this and another reply.

The process restored most of all of my issues. I still have an issue on startup with an error window stating "windows cannot find C:/windows/shell.exe". I know that this is one of the viruses that I was affected with but I am unsure on how to safely remove that flag to start that program in the startup registry.

My computer is also much, much slower since doing the cleanup process. I suspect it is because AVG is still running in the background with Norton and Spyware Terminator and Spybot might still be helping to protect too. I defragmented and that didn't change anything. It takes about 10minutes to boot up and 2-3 minutes to open Explorer the first time. After that, opening and closing windows seems to happen at a speed I would expect for a 3yr old laptop.

Thank you for reviewing my logs and advising me of the next step to take in the cleaning process. This has been an interesting learning experience.

    Regards,
    Elliot

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Did AVG Antispyware detect anything?

You forgot to attach other log that was requested from ShowNew. However before doing this I want to run a new procedure and get some new logs as you will see below.

    Download this file - combofix.exe
    1. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    2. When finished, it will produce a log ( C:\combofix.txt ) for you. Attach this log to your next reply See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT
    4. the ComboFix log
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

AVG did find stuff on the initial scan both as the Admin login and the regular user login.

Everything seems to be working ok after combofix. When I rebooted, I didn't get the error window 'windows cannot open c:/windows/shell.exe'.

Things are still running slow. I have AVG protection disabled...and Spyware Terminator protection disabled. That leaves Norton Internet Security and Spybot doing the protection. 10minutes to boot up the computer and open explorer window.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = :0
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {5D60FF48-95BE-4956-B4C6-6BB168A70310} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Printer] C:\WINDOWS\system32\printer.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Spoolsv] C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolvs.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Each round of tasks, I get faster boot up times and program opening times. Occasionally when I shut down or reboot, I get error messages about it having problems closing 'ccsvchost.exe' and unable to terminate 'ccapp.exe'. I noticed both of these programs running in my windows task manager ...processes window. I also see a lot of 'svchost' in my processes window along with the various log files. It seems like svchost is in multiple spots all over my computer. Should I be concerned about that program?

Logs are attached. I also toggled my system restore functions.

You mean ccSvcHst.exe & ccApp.exe. These are not malware they are from your Symantec AV. You may need to uninstall it, reboot, and then reinstall.

svchost.exe will always be seen running multiple times. As long as it is running from the c:\windows\system32 folder (as seen in your HJT log), they are fine.

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
