No idea why , but when booting xp cd to re install xp,,, the laptop (compaq Presario) just powers off after a while. Is there anyway to install windows xp without vdv drive? The BIOS does not offer boot from usb & there is no floppy drive on the lapper. The hard drive is wiped clean. Not good situation here.
THe lapper has powered down before when using teh dvd drive but not often .. I checked connections & they seem fine. Thanks for any help.

Is the laptop plugged in? Sometimes faulty batteries can cause random shut downs. Try removing the battery, plug in the AC adapter, and power up. There's also the possibility that the PC is overheating. Check all the fans to be sure they're spinning and clean of dust, hair, and crud. Always run the laptop on a hard surface like a table or desk; NEVER run it in bed or on a carpeted floor. The laptop needs to 'breathe' and the fans will get choked if run on carpet or in bed.
