    Chas,

I got thru the instructions/test's with no problems (if I did them correctly). I did run AVG Anti-Spyware in safe mode, went back to double-check the instructions and saw where you had edited that today after I had already completed the test.

I do have a couple of suggestions, nothing major, just some observations. I will wait until I hear from you before going into that, give you a chance to make sure everything was installed and run correctly.

    Thank's Chas,

    Steve

    Thanks Steve!
Yes I edited that today. We want to keep everything in normal boot mode to start and only run in safe mode when necessary while fixing things in the forum with special procedures. Too many people have had problems dealing with safe mode especially while getting logs. I also changed a few other things in the procedure a little while ago. One had to do with only toggling System Restore if malware had been detected and removed.

Post them anytime you want! ;)

Oh and by the way Steve, here are my observations from your logs! ;)

You missed this in the first step: Viewpoint Media Player

Also you have two old Sun Java's installed both of which are susceptable to Vundo problems.
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0

Uninstall the above and make sure you reboot after uninstalling!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

You can have HJT fix the below:
    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Thanks again for beta testing! :)

OK. I will go back and check what I missed  since I'm going to be doing this again, several times I think.

I'm going to reformat this one and install Vista. I have been meaning to put it on this laptop for a long time and just put it off. I use it for work and just had to find the right time. I figured this was the perfect time.

I am going to try and test each version of Vista. You can install any of the versions with a 30 day grace period before activation. I might run into problems, never tried it. But, I will let you know.

Just a few things I noticed or thought of while going thru the procedures.

    Thanks for the comments Steve!

Talk to Halo if you run into any problems. I know he has been playing with Vista since the beta's!

    1. Both online scans were left out on purpose to reduce the time it takes to get to initial cleaning. Other scans will be run as we deem necessary. Also anywhere from 35 to 45% of all users had some kind of problem with the online scans and they took a very long time to run.
    2. I thought the steps were written in a form that talks about during the installation. The other issue is that a significant number of people already have Spybot installed, and we don't directly discuss how to reconfigure everything except Teatimer is Spybot was already installed.
    3. Wouldn't this be covered under the Yes, I'm still having problems section. Otherwise why would they need to post anything. I would think if anyone is having any kind of problem, even if not really malware, they are still going to start a thread. Also if we did do this here (and it would be a can of worms) it would have to be in the procedures for all OS's

I was thinking it might be a way for user's to thank MG's for the malware tutorial and help. More of a way for them to let us know it helped, without having to start a thread just to say thank you.

I have always wondered how many people use the removal tools, follow the procedures, and solve the problem or issue. We never hear from those people.

    I bet it's a bunch. :)

So you mean put in a step that says something like post us a message anyway to let us know if this procedure helped you fix your problems?

Note, I have had hundreds of PM of this type! ;)

Well, I didn't think of that. :( I guess people do PM and thank you for the help even if they didn't have to post for assistance.

Yes but this is only possible due to one of many bugs in vBulletin. People with less than a 100 posts are not suppose to be able to PM on MGs.
