Illysoft LLC - SpyNoMore

I am looking for experience with this company/product. It all started with the Vundo virus/malware/BHO.

I FINALLY removed it (another story), but I initially tried using SpyNoMore. The free version detected Vundo, so I purchased the full version to remove it.

It didn't remove it. They (Illysoft LLC) advertised quick responses to questions. So far I have opened 3 tickets (#6669, #6712, #6803), and after days waiting, all three remain open. I tried emailing and ther mailbox is full. Is this company legit?

I am extremely disappointed, no even angry. SpyNoMore did NOT live up to its marketing and will not respond. Any suggestions?

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

At one time SpyNoMore was listed on the rogue tool list ( See: Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites ) however they are no longer considerer a rogue tool. But that does not mean that the tool is good. Personally I would not recommend this tool. You will have to take your issues up with the company like you are trying to do. Other than that, see if you can put a stop payment on the payment if you purchased using a credit card. That will get their attention.

If you truly had a Vundo infection, you may still have lingering issues laying around. I suggest you just quickly run the below 2 scans which should give me an idea if you do.

    Using GetRunKey
    Using ShowNew

Attach the logs after running them. See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post

Thanks very much for your response. I paid Dell to remove the Vundo virus. It took them 4 hours, and the tech was very diligent and astute. The virus had attached itself to Explorer, and because of that, would notice the deletion of the bad boy DLL. The Explorer process had to be stopped, then the DLL deleted to keep it from coming back. Dell loaded a host of utilities to delete, clean and fix the problem. So far, (it has been a week), there has been no reoccurance. I was VERY pleased with Dell's "virus staff" and highly recommend them.

A more interesting issue, I think, is how one gets the Vundo virus. The system had an up to date McAfee Virus scanner. McAfee at first did not even recognize the virus, and after looking has no complete way to clean it. There are so many variants of this virus, I believe it has most Virus scanners and Spyware programs having to use special tools.

I still doubt they got all of it. Most people (even tech support and IT professsionals) do not know where and what to look for. You really should attach those logs. The tools only take about 30 seconds to run. Vundo attaches mainly to winlogon.exe and may attach additional DLL files to explorer.exe, iexplore.exe and possibly other files too. It all depends on the form of Vundo of which there are many. Also note, we remove many of these every day and have done so for years and we do it for free. ;)

Thanks again. I will run your suggested programs. BUT, it may take a week before I can get back to you. The Vundo Virus was on a laptop, that is some number of miles away at a user site. I will have to go to the site when the user is there, come back here to this thread, run the programs and post the results. Again, thank you for your respones. I am anxious for you to see the results and determine if the virus is truly gone.

Yes it will be interesting to see the results. We have seen Vundo infections that deposit literally hundreds of files with a variety of names on PCs. And they also scatter things around in the registry. However note that there are many forms that are not so bad or that just have not had they time to spread too much and they will not leave so much junk laying around.

If I do see stuff in those logs, I may need to have you run some other tools. Thus with that in mind, it would be best if you just ran the below procedure instead which will give me the previous requested logs along with a couple others that could be needed.

    Using MGtools

Ok, I ran MGtools on the target machine and (hopefully) I have attached the ZIP file with the results. Let me know what you see/find, and TIA. BR

As I expected you are far from clean! Let's run a couple of addition tools and then we will get a new set of logs from which I will work up some cleaning procedures to remove things that will still remain.

    Download this file - combofix.exe
    1. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    2. When finished, it will produce a log ( C:\combofix.txt ) for you. Attach this log to your next reply See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Is the below file something you created and put in this folder:
    Code:
     "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\"
    rtelek~1.htm Jul 28 2007 135 "rtelekibob.html"

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Now locate the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file and double click on it to run it. This will cause a new MGlogs.zip file to be created with new logs in it. Attach this new MGlogs.zip file and also attach the log from ComboFix.

Ok, ran combofix.exe, and the log file is attached. Then I ran ATF Cleaner. Then re-ran MGtools, and the Zip file is attached. Thanks again for your help. I will again be interested in where the system stands now. BR

Please don't quote procedures when it is not necessary. It just clutters up the thread.

You forgot to attach the logs.

Thought I did attach them. I will have to go out to site and get them, or have them emailed to me. I will respond tomorrow with the logs.

Okay but you also need to make sure to answer my question about rtelekibob.html too.

Also if you do not have this PC in your possession, you do realize that you will be going to this site again to complete manual cleaning steps after I work thru the logs?

Going to the site in not too big of an issue, just making sure the target machine is there. I do not see a question about rtelekibob.html.

Logs attached. I have no idea where rtelekibob.html came from, it was not added by anyone knowingly.

Okay ComboFix removed a good chunk of the bad stuff I saw. But we have even more to do.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
    My Way Search Assistant
    Viewpoint Media Player

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

I hope I attached the correct files. The system is running great. Thanks for all the help.

    You're welcome.

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, C:\combofix.txt and C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt logs that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt, C:\runkeys.txt and C:\GetUnKey.txt logs that were created
    10. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGlogs.zip file
    11. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    12. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

  19. brunke

    brunke Private E-2

System tools per above deleted, etc. Restore points deleted/re-enabled. One last time, thank you very much for your very detailed AND strong attention to detail instructions. As far as I am concerned, this thread can be closed.
