Diablo II Direct 3D problems

I have a Dell Optiplex GX240, Just bought an Nvidia Geforce FX 5500 256MB GC.
I can play Diablo in Direct draw but not Direct3D like it recommends. It just goes to a black screen when i open the game.. Please help.

what version of windows are you running?
if it's xp you might want to run in under compatibility mode (windows me or 98) and see if ether setting helps.

Yes, I have XP. How would I do that ?

Right click on the game's icon and select compatibility
Then select run program in compatibility mode

when i double click the game icon on my desktop to start up the game it says "failed to create a direct3d device" could anyone help??

try the -d3d command line switch and make sure that your directX and you vidoe card drivers are up to date and run the diablo2vid test Btw U DO NOT NEED COMPILABLE MODE for D2 under xp It runs just fine On my pc

Btw a FX 5500 It overkill for D2 so its not your card
