Default Building a New PC

I will be building/buying a new PC in the near future, and was wondering several things...

First is there any site that would let me fully customize a PC to be built that wont charge me about 5x the cost of if i built it myself, and if not, is www.newegg.com the best site to buy individual parts from?

I plan to use this computer for just about everything. Gaming, multimedia, basic word processing, etc, So i know I will end up spending around $1500-2000 if I get a mid to upper line premade / semi-custom, but was just checking to see what your thoughts are, and any and all suggestions as far as hardware is concerned and what I should go for...

Things such as duel core vs quad core, one 512 or higher video card vs 2x 256 etc, will definately be taken into consideration, so please, any and all input is greatly appreciated!

We all have to start somewhere but let me ask, is this the first pc you have ever build??

If this is the case, then my suggestion is as follows. Visit lots of forums reads lots of threads and instead of working with preconceived ideas as to your build take note of what will actually work.

PC HW can be fickle in that some components inherently do not like others and act remarkably like people at times

Godd Luck

Well yes this would be my first PC i would be building, but i am extremely computer savvy, and know that some parts hate each other, I was wondering if anyone had either a consolidated list, or could suggest for me a few parts/combinations.... Mainly a (gaming) motherboard/CPU/videoCard/Ram setup that would be somewhere in the $1000-1500 range thus leaving around $500 for everything else (case/power/etc)

As you will see from the absence of other posts, there is no such list and the only way to begin a new build is by firstly making a motherboard choice or at least narrowing choices down to say 2 different models and then to approach the relevant forums or other specialised HW forums and read about any faults or other drawbacks that these mobos may have.

Example 1, when I began building my last rig, I selected the following motherboard Asus A8V Deluxe Rev2.0. The board has both a Via and Promise SATA controller. I discovered from the forums that when o/cing the Via SATA controller created HDD data corruption and that one should connect SATA HDD to the Promise Sata controller.

Example 2, Once you have chosen your board, the forums will also give guidance in respec of the Ram that works. Ram can be a very temperamental component at times.

Even the choice of motherboard bios can sometimes be a critical decision.

May I also say that being pc savvy and building a pc are two quite different things.

Good Luck with your new build.
