Hi,
I am ready getting to know linux. I have installed Ubuntu on an old pc. I have got it to dual boot with windows xp home. The question is though about freeware for linux - where is the best site[s] to get it from? I am so used to windows xp that and its software. Are all downloads for linux compatible with all distros? I am a real novice at linux but want to learn more about it. Thank you for reading. Bye. |

Please refer to the Ubuntu support article titled, Adding, Removing and Updating Applications.
Forget what you know about installing software on Windows. Ubuntu does it for you, for the most part. It will search the "repositories" you've enabled it to look at for the software you want, and when you find what you are after, it will download and install it for you.
