    Hi,
I am trying to set up a wired home network with a desktop and a laptop, both are running xp. I have a zoom x5 modem that already has a router built in. The desktop can see itself in the work group, the laptop does not. The work group names are the same and the computer names are different from each other. Neither computer can see the other in my network places. The biggest reason I am trying to set up this network is to be able to share my printer. Both pc's are in different rooms so that feature would be really helpful. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Some possible answers -
Have the same username and password on each comp and log in at least once.
Check firewall settings for allowing network range.
If using 3rd party firewall, check Windows firewall anyway. Sometimes it becomes enabled even if not using it.
Some good links for networking answers -

    Good Luck.

    Can both access the internet?

Try connecting them together with a cross over cable then see if they can see each other.
