Default Dual Boot Windows XP Home & Ubuntu Linux

Hi,
I have got ubuntu on a cd.
I have got an old pc with a 60 GB hard drive with Windows Xp Home on it.
I decided I wanted to have this pc as a dual boot pc with Ubuntu & Xp Home.
I booted from the cd, partitined the Xp Home into 20GB and allotted 35GB for Ubuntu.
I then installed Ubuntu.
It looked like everything was going well.
The install took about 1 hour and 10 minutes.
After the install was finished, I clicked restart now.
The pc rebooted and I got the GRUB menu.
Ubuntu was first on the list, I clicked return.
The ubuntu symbol came up on the screen and the progress bar was below it, the progress bar started and only moved a tiny amount.
The pc did nothing for a few minutes.

Then I got this screen - please find it attached.

Please does anyone know what the problem is and how do I remedy this situation?

If it is relevent here are the specs of the pc I used:
256MB RAM
60GB Hard Drive

Try here. I dual boot using the Windows ntldr, an LNX file, and the boot.ini, now. That way nix doesn't mess with my MBR. I also put nix on a slave, away from the master. Learned how to use the Windows Recovery Console due to installing nix the default way. I also use LILO, not GRUB. Good Luck, you will learn a lot about XP by using Linux.

It is an error with Linux wanting to identify all your hardware. SATA is the culprit mentioned on Launchpad.

Read the entire thread and there is a possible fix here - http://tinyurl.com/3a94tx

What version Ubuntu are you trying to install? The latest is 7.10.
Also please describe "old" pc. Mine is old, as you can see in the signature.

Mine still works!

Why? It doesn't make a bit of sense. If mucking around with the MBR, boot sector, and boot files teaches you about XP, I'll eat my shorts. Using Linux teaches you about Linux. Otherwise, people's (usually) short forays into the world of Linux would yield better Windows users.
