a friend has a computer and it is running windows xp professional he wants to connect to the internet what is the first thing he needs to do? when we tried i noticed that the modem had a yellow circle with a black explamation point inside of it. i went to a forum posted my problem about the circle and someone replied for me to uninstall the modem through the computer without taking the modem out and reboot the computer. i did what they said and now the computer does not detect the modem what can i do to help. i am using a public computer with internet access to get help with the problem :banghead

I would shut down the PC, unplug the power cord, and open the PC and remove the modem. The plug it in, and boot it up without the modem. Check the device manager and make sure all other devices are installed and working correctly. Then shut down, unplug the power cord again, and put the modem back in and use a different slot. The plug in again and boot up. Windows should at least detect the modem, and hopefully it will install a driver for it. There's a chance it won't install the driver, so before installing the modem in the PC, write down any brand names and model numbers on the modem. There's usually one big chip (and lots of smaller ones) that's got a name like Conexant or Agere on it (those are two of the main companies), but it might be something else. Anyway, write down the name from the chip, and any numbers on the chip. Like a typical Agere chip would have SV92P-T00 on it (for example). If Windows doesn't load the driver, post the info you wrote down, and we'll try to help.

    gimpster123 Bring out the Gimp.

removing/replacing a modem is pretty basic, I'd assure your friend its routine and follow DLB's advice.

that software (everest) tells you information about your comp, and what software versions you have. if it detects your modem (and your post said it didn't) it might tell you what manufacturer it is, but i don't know about the version, etc. it would be alot more beneficail if you were to pull it out, as recommended (by dlb). why do they not want you to open the case? is it under warranty (if so take it back)? if it's not under warranty, then necessary steps need to be taken (either by you, or pay someone). g/l - sos

Everest is too big for a floppy (4 Megs) do you have a thumb drive? Odds are that if your modem is not detected, Everest won't see it either. That is why we have suggested removing and reinstalling the modem to see if XP will reconize it.

well, i can't get to majorgeeks right now (must be done). however, the link you provided in your 2nd post was for everest (i just can't verify it right now). as mentioned, it's to big to put on a floppy, you will need either a flash drive, and/or burn it to a cd.

OK- Everest will not fit on a floppy, and in this particular situation, I don't think Everest will help anyhow. Try using a program called "Unknown Devices" (download link below). It is small enough for a floppy and provides detailed information about (you guessed it) unknown devices. You can use it to create a log file that lists any unknown devices and their details, and saves it as a text file to be opened with Notepad. So, run it, save the log file, and then upload the log as an attachment in a future post. "Unknown Devices" mainly provides info for devices which do not have drivers installed, but the devices must be recognized by Windows in the Device Manager, and will usually be marked with a yellow ! or a ? meaning that it has no drivers or is unknown, but this also means that Windows is "seeing" the actual device, just no software is available for the device. Anyway, blah blah blah....
Here's the link to Unknown Devices: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3908.html
    Good luck!

It doesn't matter where you live. You have 4 places to pick from to download from - that's it. Click on one of the four and get the download.

ok, the sofware link you provided us in your post earlier was for everest. the link that dlb provided was for 'unknown devices" as you mentioned. i've provide 2 screenshots below. on the 1st one, you click somewhere to d/l (download) from, it doesn't matter where (what country etc), it will take you to another page (or open another window). from there you will be able to d/l (download) the program. if your not able to d/l (download) the program (2nd screenshot), you might have to click on the ie security warning (up at the top of your browser window) and select d/l (download) the file (or click "click here if it does not"). of course save it where you can find it (ie desktop - or wherever). there are other ways to do this, but i'm trying to keep it simple as possible. anyway, g/l i'm out for the night. - sos

if i'm reading it right it's a motorola modem, but doesn't give a model #.

"Communications cable between two computers" <-- i don't really know what this means

my guess, it looks like it's an older comp that has had xp loaded onto it?
i think your still going to have to open it up to get the detailed information we need. although, i'm sure someone will pop around soon. g/l, sos

Unknown devices might but the easiest way is to open the computer and look at the marking on the motorola modem. There are lots of models that we can't begin to guess what model is in the computer.

Do you know the brand and model of the computer? I see it is running at 550Mhz, it's a Pent. III and has a 6.4GB hard drive. If I knew the brand and model, I might be able to see what modem came with the computer.

I have no idea. Every piece of hardware is different. Open it up, get a flashlight and write down any kind of letter and number string that you see on the modem. You can tell it is the modem because it will have the connector for the telephone line on the back of the computer.

Since you are going to open the case, try removing it. Start the PC, then shut it down and put it back in and turn it back on like we orginally suggested. The Operating System may detect it. Also new modems only cost a few bucks and are avail at Radio Shack or Walmart.

As far as I can see, there is no modem in the computer.

You have an ethernet card. Are you sure you aren't trying to plug the phone line into the ethernet jack?

do you really need a modem? are you trying to connect to the internet with a dialup acct?

i think it's a 4 pin (phone line), vs an 8 pin ethernet cord.

The OP is trying to connect by dialup.
My question was directed to him because people have been known to plug a phone wire into an ethernet RJ45 and expect it to work. I wasn't questioning the type of wire; I was questioning the port on the computer that the phone wire is plugged into.

yes plodr, i knew what you were talking about, i've also seen people try to plug in the phone wire into an ethernet port. i was just trying to clarify, as i didn't see anything about dialup mentioned (i might have missed it). - sos

Sorry  , once it gets into two pages and that long list of things, it does get hard to follow.
I also don't know about the "communications cable between two computers" part. If you connect a cell phone to a computer by a data cable, does that constitute communications cable between two computers?

i have no idea. my friend used her phone (not sure if it was a blackberry?) as her access point for her desktop to get internet access, but she connected her phone via usb cable. - sos

tmm5899, you didn't post the whole thing. yes, a modem in your comp, is the same size (4 pin) as your telephone jack (as i stated in 1 of my posts). we are very much trying to help you, but i think we've hit a brick wall (which we mentioned prior - if it did detect your modem, it probably won't say what model #, and the other guys are saying that it did not recognize your modem period). you really need to open the case, and look at the modem itself, jot down any information that you think is pertinent (sp), and/or take pictures, that we can see. it's not that hard. g/l, i'm outta here for the night. - sos

Yes, you will not be able to get any further at the OS is not detecting it. You can even get a new modem for about $10, just to have standing by. If its not needed you can take it back.

    1) are you sure you are dialed up, and are connected to the internet (via your isp - internet service provider)?

    2) if you are connected to the internet. then read on. i figure you are using ie (internet explorer), as it has a content advisor. i'm sure somebody set a password on that acct. if you open ie --> tools -->internet options --> content tab (screenshot below). see if you can change anything in there.

you can either try and guess at the p/w (ie - if the hint is zero, try zero, 0, try putting nothing in the box, etc.).

if you can't figure out the p/w, then i'd try a different browser (ie firefox)

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2248.html <-- Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.12 (although it's too big for a floppy) - Size: 5.75 MB

    what is firefox for :confused

Firefox is another web browser, like Internet Explorer.

Does your friend have ISP? Did you set up a Dial UP connection with that ISP (ie tell it what number to dial)? He will need whatever password that was initially set up with his ISP or he will need to contact them via phone to get it reset.

Unless he gets connected via his ISP all he will get is "page not found".

Have you downloaded their Dialer? It should walk you through a connection. Check their FAQ on their Website.

once again, if you are connected to the internet, you will probably need to use another browser (unless you know the content advisor p/w in internet explorer).

are there any other browsers installed on that comp (ie - netscape, firefox, msn, etc)? g/l, sos

If you looked at the nocharge main page, you should have seen this.
Also if you do not live in the NW at one of these locations http://www.nocharge.com/connect.htm
or New England at Duxbury, Chatham, or Gilbertville you will not be able to connect.

if you have netscape try that to see if you can d/l, firefox, or something else? if you d/l firefox, or whatever at your library, save it to someplace that you can find it (ie - your desktop), try to "right click" your file, and send to your cd drive (make sure you have a cd, or a cdrw in the drive, and go from there. hopefully you can get it from there. g/l, sos
