Default HDD backup RAID or external HDD?

We have 3 PCs and a laptop. My question is, does each PC need its own backup drive if we go external?

I only have 1 PC that is RAID capable. All running XP Pro SP2

Obviously the laptop has to have an external drive or discs for backup.

I have Acronis true image to utilize. :D

OH and the RAID question, the second drive has to be identical to the main correct?
