need to reinstall services.exe

I accidently removed services.exe for the registry thinking it was a trojan. now my plug and play is not functioning.
Is there anyway to repair the registry.

Try a system restore. Restore to a point before you deleted services.exe.

I tried that. But there are no restore points to go to.

Services.exe accidentally deleted

Services.exe is a vital Windows system file. Fortunately, when users accidentally delete this very important Windows system file; they actually have several options available to restore services.exe:

Option 1 - Try "Last Known Good Configuration":

1. Start your computer.
2. When you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message, press the F8 key.
3. When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.
4. If you are running other operating systems on your computer, use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft Windows XP, and then press ENTER

Option 2 - Try System Restore in Safe Mode:

If this does not work then reboot your computer again. Try to start in Safe Mode by taping the F8 and when you get the booting options select Safe Mode. On Safe Mode try to perform System Restore to an earlier date then log on Normal Mode and see if you are successful.

Please Note: Make sure that you choose a restore to a point that is PRIOR TO when you deleted services.exe.

Option 3 Copy services.exe from another folder:

In case you deleted services.exe, then you can copy it from another folder:

From: C:\windows\system32\dllcache folder
To: C:\windows\system32 folder.

Please Note: the "dllcache" folder is a hidden folder.
You will need to enable by opening any folder and going to Tools > Folder Options > View.
Then check the option "Show Hidden files and Folders" which is located under "Files and Folders" > "Hidden Files and Folders"

Very Important Note: Make absolutely CERTAIN that you "COPY" this file - and NOT "MOVE" this file.

Option 4 - Reboot from Windows CD - Do Windows Repair

If those previous options do not work; try boot from your Windows CD, (assuming you are using either Win 2K or Win XP). Then when the cd boots it will ask if you want to "install" or "recover" choose recover.

During installation, choose 'install' rather than 'repair' - Once it goes through loading some files, it will recognize that you already have Windows XP installed on a partition. At this point it will ask you if you want to install on a different partition, repair this installation, etc. Choose repair. This option will only reinstall the system files needed, and your files should stay intact.

IMPORTANT: You will need to reinstall device drivers/etc. after the repair is completed.

Oh, anytime Bill. It's my pleasure really and I'm so glad that my suggestion helped you out and that the repair option actually restored the Windows registry for you.

Side Note: In the future whenever you find a file suspicious; you might want to COPY that file to a CD/DVD rather than to choose to immediately "delete" the file, particularly regarding any Windows system file(s). This way you can immediately restore the file should something go wrong later on.
