Default Vista Wireless problem

Hi, I'm having the following problem. I have Vista Home Premium on an HP laptop (new) and a dlink router connected to my desktop running XP Pro. I can connect the laptop by wireless only if I reboot the router but then the connection will cut off even though I have a strong signal. I reboot the router again - I connect to the internet - I'm OK for an hour or 5 hours or 5 minutes, the time seems to be random - I get a 'Limited Connectivity - Local connection only', followed by no connection. If I try to reconnect I get 'No wireless networks are available'. I don't know what to do. I also tried to connect using two friends wireless systems. With one I couldn't get on the Internet at all although I was connected to the router and the other worked perfectly for an hour but I had to leave so I don't know what would've happened. Any advice would be much appreciated. (I can connect no problem with a LAN cable)

What power setttings are you using?

I run my wireless in low power mode, but some routers do not properly support it, and connections become a problem.

Also, it coulod very well be the channel you are using isn't suitable. You can change that within the router.

Do any of your friends have wifi laptops that can conclusively localise the problem to your laptop, rather than the Dlink?

Hi and thanks for your advice so far. I have full power on either using battery or electricity so that's not the problem. I'm about to change channels no to see if that helps. Next step is to bring a friends laptop here to see whether it can connect and thus eliminate the router. Will get back to you asap.

Hi everyone. Sorry for the delay. I have tested my router (works perfectly) and my laptop - doesn't work with any wireless! After some research on HP Forum I have discovered that the HP Pavilion dv6000 series has a problem with its wireless connection. Thousands of customers since Jan 2007 have been on the HP forum complaining about it and at last HP seem to have admitted there is a problem - with the system board, I think. I have sent my PC back to HP for repair, as it is under guarantee. Sorry for wasting everyone's time with this problem but I was at my wits end. And thanks to everyone who tried to help.

If anyone else has a wireless connection problem with this model they should get in touch with HP.
