Default AppHangB1 & APPCRASH

hi
i'm reinstalling this very old game - Final Fantasy VIII - for my little cousin to play.
my laptop is now Windows Vista Basic, with Directx 10 installed.
i've tried changing the compatibility mode for the game to Windows 95 and Windows 98 but no luck in running the game.
i've tried disabling visual themes, desktop composition and display scaling on high DPI settings but still didn't work.

the message i've gotten from FF8.exe are these:

i've tried searching about AppHangB1 online and mostly they are on IE7. I don't use IE7 (though it's installed in my notebook), i use mostly Firefox.

so how do i go about solving this and enable the game play?

thanks a lot

[edit] sorry i didn't see the game section and just posted this message here.

Hi

Get and install the game patch update 1.2 http://www.fileplanet.com/41552/0/0/0/1/section/Patches

If that doesnt help try the below.....

Well only read this one on a game site and thought it was the weirdest fix or possible fix ever but some users of Vista 32bit have found that FF8 works after doing this, so here goes

Open up the FF8 folder on your PC ( likely if default install, will be in C: > Program Files ) then in that folder make a new folder and call it anything you want, say for arguments sake, FF8 Run and then right click and copy the ff8.exe file and paste it into the new folder, then update the Start Menu/Desktop Shorcuts to this new location and see if the game runs. ( DO not delete the older FF8.exe file, just leave it be )

Told you it was a weird workaround!!

Sadly many older games just dont work with Vista, and even more sad is that many of the developers are not updating the games to work.

hey no kidding!

i didn't install the patch though.
went straight to try the method (i didn't even think that it'd work in the first place)
after that the game really starts!

it's indeed one of the weirdest fix but it is a solution after all

thanks a lot!

[edit] i still couldn't play though because everytime i click "new game", the game won't work :s so i'm getting the patches and see how. xD
