Default Free AVG anti-virus version 8 and XP Service Pack 3

I installed Windows XP Service Pack 3 last Thursday. It went well.

I installed the new free AVG version 8 today.

I scanned my computer with this new AVG and found 160 warnings which I never saw before!! Yet the result was no threats! When I saw them warnings I nearly freaked out! At the end of the scan I removed them all to the virus vault for now.

Here are a few examples of what was shown:

File: Result/Infection:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibil (on all of them)
Found Downloader.ConHook.1
Found Adware. Vundo - Rogue Suspect - Cram Toolbar - Begin2Search - Generic.
Found Trojan.KillAV.F - Ciadoor.m - Stoped.6

I scanned with Spybot Search & destroy and Adaware 2007 and the results were 0 spyware etc.

My questions are:
1) Does the new AVG recognize Windows Service Pack 3?
2) Should I restore the 160 items, removing them from the vault?
3) What is Active X do and what do I need it for. Do I need to disable Active X? If so, how?

Please be gentle with me, I'm still a newbie!

I'm sooo confused now. Please help if you can. Thank you.

Do you have SpywareBlaster installed? If so, go into SpywareBlaster and check to see if all protection is enabled for Internet Explorer.

AVG may be detecting a false-positive in SpywareBlaster. :o

Yes, I do have SpywareBlaster and just looked to see if Explorer was fully enabled. It showed partially enabled so I just enabled it all.

Should I restore the 160 items I put in the AVG vault?

Thank you Mickey!!

I enabled SpywareBlaster on the Explorer, ran a new scan on the free AVG, version 8 and now there are 190 "warnings" on the AVG scanning result, 30 more than on the previous virus scan.

So it's not the SpywareBlaster. Perhaps it's the AVG that's picking up false positives then? Or are they really "false positives"? Prior to installing Windows Service Pack 3, I had no info on the results at all on AVG. *scratching my head*

Thank you.

BTW: I use Firefox all the time, unless forced to use Explorer.

There is no need to restore the items in the AVG vault. If you enabled everything in SpywareBlaster, it will put them back.

I believe AVG is just detecting the SpywareBlaster entries/keys. It happened to me when I upgraded/installed AVG 8.0 :o

I believe someone else on here posted with the same issue not long ago. :o

I found the answer!!

I uninstalled SpywareBlaster and ran the AVG scan again. This time there were no warnings on the AVG free version 8! It's SpywareBlaster that's causing the "warnings" to appear. Conflicting programs I think.

I visited the AVG forum and found a post similar to mine. The reply was to disable the Spywareblaster etc. but that didn't work after another AVG scan because the 190 warnings would still come up.

According to AVG forum AVG technologies is working with SpywareBlaster ( and I suspect Spybot also) to get the issue resolved. Updates MAY follow either by AVG, SpywareBlaster and Spybot. By what I found it's the SpywareBlaster that caused the "warnings".

I still have AVG Anti-spyware, Ad-aware 2007 and Spybot so I should still be safe (after the fact)

Thanks for steering me in the right direction Mickey!!

Here's the link that led me to try out how to correct the conflict: http://freeforum.avg.com/read.php?12...backpage=6,sv=

Oh, no problem. It helps when someone else has had similar issues.

It picks up the SpywareBlaster items and Spybot items and falsely reports them as malware.

Although I have Spybot, all warnings disappeared after having removed SpywareBlaster's Program. I really like that program though although I had to remove it because I HATE seeing those "warnings" coming up again and again.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes it does Mickey! And I thought it had to do with Windows Service Pack 3! Again, thank you for being there for me.

You're more than welcome!! It took me some searching... not easy finding the answer when only a newbie.

AVG version 8 takes more time to scan than it's previous version 7.5 so I uninstalled it and will try Avast for now. Will install SpywareBlaster again.
