Need Advice on Replacing Notebook CD Drive

The CD drive on a Gateway M500B notebook appears defective. In Windows, the drive does not read CDs although the device manager reports that it is working properly. The BIOS reports that the drive is being seen by the system, but the notebook cannot be booted from the CD drive although the boot order lists the CD drive as the first boot option.

Unless there is something else that I can do to make sure that something else may not be causing the drive to function improperly, where can I get a replacement? Must it be from Gateway or can I order online (ex. NewEgg, etc.) and get a drive that will be compatible with this system?

Gateway doesn't appear to support this notebook any longer.

After trudging through Gateway's site I did manage to find this http://www.gateway.com/home/services/index.php?seg=hm&cmpid=leftnav_hm_serv

However I was not able to get any further without a serial number. About the middle of the page there is a warranty/upgrade option. Clicking on that it will bring you to another page where you can enter a serial number and model. That is where I had to stop.

Also there are sites that offer refurbed replacement drives such as http://www.priorityelectronics.com/gateway/5502789.htm

I've tried Gateway's site before and entered the serial number. For this notebook, it directs me to MPC which doesn't seem to support the notebook. That's the reason for this post.
