Dual Core Vs Quad

I am not a gamer. I do multitask, with a cd or dvd being made, while I am working with photoshop, while spysweeper is cleaning, and I am listening to a broadcast. Which processor would be the best so that all of my simultaneously-running programs will not stutter, slow down, or freeze? Thias ias assuming all other things are equal.

Make sure, whatever you decide on, that you try out CPU-Control from http://www.majorgeeks.com/CPU-Control_d5875.html

I set mine to AUTOMATIC, and forget about it. It works well, IMO.

CPU-Control handles the CPU-affinity for multicore-systems (supports quadcores as well). Instead of running each process on both CPUs you can define it as you want it. For example, if you want to seperate the firewall and the anti-virus-software from the graphics-application.

CPU-Controls offers five different ways to control the CPU-affinity:
1. Automatic: It chooses alternatingly one CPU for each new process
2. Manual: You define a list, where you can set the way to handle each process
3. All processes run on CPU 1, which is useful for old applications which crashes on a dual core system
4. All processes run on CPU 2
5. Deactivated
