Does PCI Express x1 do anything useful?

I can't find a single really awesome reason why these are becoming so ubiquitous on new mobos. I started seeing them back when I put together my first dual-core PC and I didn't even know what they were. I'm starting my first quad-core build and the mobo I'm looking at has 1 PCI-Express x16, 2 PCI-Express x1, and 1 good old PCI slot. A brief search of newegg shows that most cards that use PCI-Ex x1 are host cards for RS-232 ports and the like.

Is the industry going to move to PCI-1x as the new PCI? I ask because right now I only have one and it's going to have to go to my wireless networking card, since I at least have integrated sound (my sound card'll collect dust till I find a PCI-Ex 1x sound card).
