USB 2.0 Hub No Longer 2.0?

My 4 port USB hub worked perfectly for about a year, now an icon keeps popping up telling me I could transfer files faster if I used a USB 2.0 drive.
All transfers are now really really slow. When I plug the same device straight into the computer no problems.
Do these hubs go bad? I was just thinking of buying a different one since they are so cheap but I was just wondering if there was something easy to fix.

    Hi

At times when these USB items play up you can reinstall the drivers, plug in the USB hub, locate its driver in Device Manager and delete it, unplug the hub and re-plug it in so that the OS re-installs the driver.
