I am using an HP a6340be (the be at the end is just to indicate that it is Belgian spec I.E. it's an AZERTY keyboard) and it came preloaded with Vista home premium.

when i installed the OS it automatically created 3 partitions the disk (H) is my external HD(see screenshot) now i have over 600 GB on my hard disk so it does not worry me but i am just curious to know could these be made into 1 partition without affecting the OS?

If you want control over partitions, you can do that by clicking Advanced during Vista setup. Then customize the partitions to your liking. Or you can partition the harddisk(s) in advance using your harddisk manufacturer's tools. Check out their sites for downloads.
