Its a HP Pavilion ZE4220 when the laptop is on the screen is dark you can't see nothing you can barely make out anything just the outlines of things and some words but if you hook it to a CRT monitor you see everything fine. Does this mean the screen is bad or is it something else? I tried to turn the brightness up but that does nothing.:confused

Could be. Why not uninstall & reinstall the display driver? Sometimes the monitor profile can be screwed up. If that doesn't do it, it might need professional help. Or you can use an external monitor.

Open Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Power options and check for a Profile setting that adjusts the LCD Brightness when the laptop is plugged in or running on battery.

If when you turn the laptop on you can just barely see things it sounds like it my be the lcd back light that lights of the display. You can check this by opening up the screen and removing the lcd panel (be carefull doing this don't break the lcd screen) on the panel there is a long cold cathrod lamp, take it's power connectors and feed them 12 volts if it lights up it is good if not you need to replace it, any cold cathrod light for lcd screens should work as long as it is the same size.
