Major malware infection, and unable to run .exe's or IE

I got some serious malware this morning on my Windows XP machine. First time it's ever happened... guess it came bundled with a Data Recover program I got. Anyway, I have the black background that says "Warning! Spyware threat has been detected on your PC.", along with hundreds pf pop-ups and crap.

First thing I tried to do is a system restore. No restore points. Great :confused

I followed the Read Me, and deleted a few things in the Add/Remove programs listing. I set msconfig to normal. When I tried to download the cleaning programs, I realized IE would not load any page I told it to, and Firefox won't open. When I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, it says "Task manager has been disabled by your administrator".

So here I am, on my laptop. I transferred the cleaning programs to that computer via my home network. The computer will not open those .exe files, it does nothing when I double click them.

I'm not sure what I can even do at this point... Any help is greatly appreciated.

Can you boot into safe mode......combofix would be the first thing to try if you can. Let me know.

I can boot into safe mode. combofix is one of the programs that I cannot get to run, no matter what I try.

SuperAntiSpyware is working. I'm currently scanning in safe mode (for the fifth time, this is the first time that it is clean.... so far!). At this point, I am getting no more pop-ups, but still cannot load IE pages, Firefox won't open at all, and I can't run most .exe's.

I cannot get hijackthis to install on the computer, either.

Everything else is running great since I ran SuperAntiSpyware, no pop ups or anything, the background is back to normal, I really don't want to give up yet.

Can you run the MGTools.exe? I really need those logs. What error, if any, are you getting when you try to run it? How about Malwarebytes? What happens with comboFix when you try to run it?

I'm currently running AVG, and it found 14 "things", including trojan horse instances that nothing else has found (ad aware, SuperantiSpyware, ccleaner, fixiedef).

When I try to open those programs, nothing happens. I double click the .exe file, and literally, nothing happens. It doesn't even show up in task manager.

I had to send a "task manager fix" program to the computer and run that just to regain the ability to open task manager.

I'll see what AVG does, and try to run MGTools and Malwarebytes again and see what happens, and get back to you. I'm hopeful now that AVG found stuff.

    Thanks,

    Justin

If this is AVG8...it has issues of it's own. :(

Can you run any exe files? You associations may be screwy. Go HERE
and scroll down a little to the exe fix.

Do this after scanning but before doing anything else.

Will I be safe deleting the crap it comes up with? It should be done any minute now.

I can open some exe's. IE7, Superantispyware, AVG, etc... Just not the ones you want me to run, haha.

I hope it is....go ahead and let it remove those items.

The problem still persists, after AVG removed that stuff.

I ran that .exe restore program, no change. Unable to open combofix, malwarebytes, or spybot S&D.

Not sure where to go from here.

    And can't run MGTools,exe? RIght?

Lets try this: Download TrendMicro's HiJackThis....install it to C:\Program FIles\HJT and then rename the exe to Analyse -> C:\Program FIles\HJT\Analyse.exe

See it that will run and you can attach to next reply.

    Here we go...

Got a SUPERAntiSpyware log and MGTools log for ya. MGTools worked this time around somehow.

Well, I wasted time by not following directions. After renaming combofix, it worked. Sorry about that.

    Attached is the log.

    Thanks,

    Justin

I think it's fixed!!! Since I ran combofix, IE has full functionality and I just opened Firefox!

So, basically, if I would have followed the directions, this would have worked without your help.

I do appreciate your patience and will report back with the final verdict after a few reboots and additional checking.

    Thanks,

    Justin

Very good...now we can get to work:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following:

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it(Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.
    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Here are the requested logs. Some of the things in that you wanted me to "fix" were not in the list when I went to select them, maybe 3-4 of them.

Didn't realize my malware protection programs came back up after the reboot, so they were active during the MGtools scan. Here is one without the malware protection programs running...

Now you are looking much better...just a few things left to do:

First tell me what this is:
    C:\WINDOWS\CSC

    Then find and delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\SnVzdGluIEdvb2Q

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.

    * Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    * Under Main choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser

    * Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser

    * Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Now tell me how things are running.

I don't know what that CSC thing is. There are eight folders in that directory, labeled "d1" through "d8", and all are empty. There are also two "system files" named "00000001" and "00000002". I've never noticed them before.

OK, I deleted the SnVzdGluIEdvb2Q folder.

    I also ran ATF Cleaner.

Everything is working great!!! Thank you very much!!!

Then I would suggest you delete that folder and its contents.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
    2. Click START then RUN
    * Now type "%userprofile%\Desktop\cf" /u in the runbox and click OK.
    * Note: The space between the cf and the /U, it must be there.
    3. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    4. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    5. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    6. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
