OK, this is the start of what I hope is not a long ordeal...
1st I guess I'll mention that I don't have speakers connected, but headphones...
I don't know much about drivers or graphics cards, but I am handy enough to take my PC apart and install a DVD writer, and I could install a new sound card if I need one. ( yeah, hardware department)
Could I have burned out my sound card?

Or could it be I lost my audio driver with malware cleaning accidentally?

Note I have been without audio for quite a while (2 months...), even before I had malware problems,
I have since gotten rid of malware crashes and only now I have continued to attempt solving the audio problem.

I can live without audio, (I have a radio in the room), but it sure is nice when I want to watch a video and someone is speaking, etc...
    :)

Google "pc wizard" and find your audio card make & model. Or you can post the specs here.

Amazingly I found what you pointed me towards, I downloaded ...
I have the exe set-up thing on my desktop...
but when I tried to run it...
a whole full page screen popped up with a little message in the middle said:
... "set up is unable to detect a supported product on your system. please ensure that your product is properly installed before running this set up program. set up will exit.''
then a box below says "OK"
I click on it and back to square one right here.:confused
I think we're on the right track???

yeah, it was the same numbers... the one i tried...
I got sidetracked with other malware problems on a different PC...
my audio is not my highest priority, (I'd only give my left eye to get my audio working right again rolleyes)

I'm having system crashes when I attempt a new download sometimes,
Almost had that problem fixed... then it came back just like it was before.
I noticed that my A squared anti-virus thing picked up a threat and my 'ex' wife name was on it...
she uses my PC sometimes to check her email and plays games...

Back to my audio problem... I bought new speakers...
it's kind of hard to fix an audio problem without speakers :-D

My son says I should take the case off my tower and he'll look at my cards...etc.
see, I wan't to add ram also...

could it be that my audio card is broken?
    Hardware problem?

or do you think it's just a software driver?
I recently (April) brought my PC with me on Amtrak from Arizona to Wisconsin...
It could have got bumped... but everything else basically works fine...

Odds are it's a driver, but that doesn't mean it can't be a bad chip.
Or as you said it could have gotten knocked loose on the train.
That's a simple matter of opening the case and making sure it is seated properly.
