Generic Volume Shadow Copy

I am running Windows XP Pro sp3 on a new computer. I just tried using EMC Retrospect to back up files on an external drive. Before Retrospect started its backup I got a message from Windows: "Installing New Hardware". The window described the new hardware as "Generic Volume Shadow Copy."
I have never seen that message before when I've used Retrospect. I assume this is a Microsoft service, but why the message about "installing new hardware"?

When I started doing some web surfing about the message, I found some users who say that the message comes up repeatedly. I am reluctant to mess with this service until I understand that it will operate OK. If not, I want to be able to reverse the install and do something else about backups.

Any advice, help, information, would be much appreciated.

    Thanks.
