computer locks up during restarts...any help

    I am running win xp and every time I restart it locks up, then can't shut down or anything without doing a hard restart by powering off the pc. This is a family pc and no telling what may have been downloaded, etc. Have followed the malware cleaning procedures and everything is clean. Any help would be appreciated.

    P.S. It starts up just fine after a hard restart, but I don't like doing this.

    Have you checked to see if the XP CD has repair option and going through that?

    Can you restart into safe mode?
