I have got an adsl connection at my home ,i have connected two computers using a fast Ethernet switch and connected the switch to the adsl modem.

First computer which is in the same room as the modem is working fine and is not having any problems while downloading files from internet. But the second computer which is approx 30 meters from the modem and the switch is having problem loading pages and downloading files.

I am not sure if the distance is an issue in this case.So please tell me if i can do something to improve the download speed on second system.

    Thanks

the modem and switch don't act as DHCP server giving out individual IP addresses, you're going to need a router for that

Sounds right, if you could post ipconfig netmask info..

You could try using ICS (Internet Connection SHaring) I suppose, I'm not fond of it though

This is the information which i got from ipconfig/all command

Hope it will be of help to you.

the PC that you posted that off of is not getting DNS from your ISP. I stand by what I said earlier, either enable ICS on the PC that does work or get a router

Probably doesn't need to have the DNS servers in the computer set to be that of the ISP. Most modems work as DNS servers, and most can act as DCHP servers as well. At least, every modem I've ever seen, be it DSL or cable.

Is the screenshot of the computer with good connectivity or of the one with bad connectivity? We need a screenshot of the ipconfig /all results on the computer that is getting bad connectivity so that we can make sure everything looks correct as far as addresses go.

If you can, might as well check the wiring. Especially if you ran it through the attic or something and used staples or something of that nature to secure it. I've seen problems with that before.

The snapshot i have posted is of the computer with good connectivity and the one in this post is of the modem, i can also post any other information you want for the modem settings.

Also i will post the ipconfig details of the computer with bad connectivity in next post.Hoping to get a solution.
As unbanable said i will check the cable also as its stretched for 30 meters and make sure that its in a good state.

I beg to differ on that, of all the ISP's I've had, I've NEVER seen a modem give out DNS OR DHCP (unless it was a router\modem combo) I've had cable, dsl, adsl, dsl w\ PPPOE. The modem retrieves both DNS & an IP address from the ISP's servers

I am posting the ipconfig for the system in which i am facing the problem

Hope this will be of use.In any case what i am not able to understand is that thought the 2 systems are connected and able to access internet is there a possibility that the second system which is not working fine at the moment has anything to do with the distance between the system and the switch.

Still trying to find something which shows the relation between distance and signal issues.

    :confused

Well... 30 meters is almost 100 feet, so yes, that is quite a long distance. Lets see... Is the computer with bad connectivity able to connect/browse pages at all? Is it just really slow and doesn't work 100% of the time?

The IP config looks good... Apparently you're router is DHCP capable(meaning it will act as a DHCP server for devices & computer connecting to it) based on the IP settings shown in the ipconfig.

Looking up the stats on your modem... It has both DHCP server capability and DNS Proxy capability. But we already pretty much knew that based on the ipconfig results... (http://www.beetelmodems.com/220bx.html)

May just be that we're from very different parts of the country, then.

    Left field suggestion -
Does the switch have additional ports and have you tried them?
Can you switch cables from the good connection port to the bad connection port to see if it is a switch hardware problem?

    hi lbmest
i have tried changing the ports and it does not make any difference to the system with good connectivity or even to the one which is not working properly.
So i think that we can rule out the switch hardware problem.

As Unbanable asked if the system with bad connectivity able to browse the pages or not the answer is yes it is able to browse pages but at very slow speeds.

So is it that we can narrow it down to the distance issue.I mean is 100 feet long enough to make internet access so slow.
If any one has ever read an article which relates signal strength to distance it would be helpful if they can post the link.

If anyone has any other ideas to sort this out then please tell me and i will be more than happy to execute them.:cry

    Re: Problem in LAN Sorted

    HI guys

I am not sure if this surprises you or not but i have just got the problem sorted.
The only thing i did was to configure the LAN card on the system which had problem accessing internet to work on Half Duplex.(As suggested by one of my friends)

I am still looking for articles on internet which can explain this to me.But if you know of any link please post it here.

Thank you all guys for your suggestions.
