Have a recurring error code 0x80070565 the maximum amount of secrets that may be stored in a single system has been exceeded This prevents a defrag and system restore. I could not resolve this a couple of weeks ago so performed a clean install which I really dont wish to do again. Have crawled all over the net to no avail many references to DVD Shrink which is not installed, M$ in their wisdom tells me the error code and what it does but thats all. Any ideas Geeks ???

So, you've resolved the problem for now but you're seeking answer as to why it happened in case the problem arises again, right?

Thanks for your input geeks. As you say this error is not a Vista problem as a rule as all references I have found as well as you is for Win 2000 and XP. So me gets to thinking that it may be a nasty so ran all malware AV I have installed but nothing found, so I went into safe mode to do an Online Kaspersky scan but when i went to scan IE crashed, same using Trendmicro. Duplicated this action in normal mode but still the same. I then remembered I had not installed SP1 so commenced that action but that would not complete install, tried several times. So the only action to take now was a ''WindowsImageBackup'' which was succesful. Once again guys thanks for your help. :major The mystery remanins. PS. Able to defrag etc. now and it seems problem solved although unconventially.

Strange, there's now three active threads about the 'maximum secrets' problem this month. Something is definitely going on but I don't know what? Coincidence?:confused

Hi again .. in my case I believe it was a virus, so I suggest to others that have posted to perform an extensive malware search, but having said that I could not pin it down. Each time I went online even in safe mode to kaspersky free online scan whenever I clicked to DL Explorer crashed, I could navigate all over kaspersky site (different pages) Ok but hit the DL button and Bahm! Explorrer crashed. This also happened on TrenMicro as well. The symptons are .. cannot defrag and cannot use system restore as the warning error code 0x80070565 the maximum amount of secrets that may be stored in a single system has been exceeded would come up each time. If its not a virus strange why so may posts of this sympton as augiedoggy stated. If anyone finds it and and an antidote plz post back.

    Hi Guys

maximum amount of secrets that may be stored

Reference not being able to go to a restore point and the message above being displayed.

I managed to fix the problem in Vista after hours of trials and tribulations. The secret was to conduct a virus/spyware/addware scan in safe mode.

I did go through a number of other activies listed below but I dont think they had any effect.

    1. Disabled any addon I didnot recognise in Internet Explorer
    2. Cleared all cookies
    3. Cleared all unnecessary files using disk clean up

Make sure your using a good scanner /detector and you should be OK.

    Good Luck :)

You have a virus. See my note above from CliftonW. Basically you need to clean your computer in safe mode.

This 0x80070565 often comes from a trojan in a registry editor sales campain that is disguised as a MS Windows Program (non-internet) warning window. Telling you that a virus or spyware has been found on your registry. It comes from many different sites such as friend finders, reunion and porn sites. The only way to close the window is to buy the product, a registry clean-up software. The product is junk. It shuts down numerous filters and gains control of software.
If you do not purchase it and finally get the screens, it has taken over closed, the trojan remains. It causes your IE to go to Gateway search pages and ads for items they steer you too. It also eventually gets into Restore from earlier etc function of the computer.

    Try the following:
    1) Start the computer in Safe Mode without networking.
    2) Open a command prompt as administrator
    3) Type "net stop winmgmt" without quotes and press enter to make certain the WindowsManagementInstrumentation (WMI) service is not running.
    4) Rename 'Repository' Folder to 'Repository' (exactly the same) in windows\system32\wbem
    5) Reboot and restart as normal
    6) Open a command prompt as administrator.
    7) Type "net stop winmgmt" without quotes and press enter to stop the wmi service. After you type "net stop winmgmt" you'll have to type "Y"(for yes)
    8) Type winmgmt /resetRepository and restart the system.

    See if this works.

Let me know if it works.

This is a malware. I was very annoyed with this problem. Searched many websites, forums but nothing worked. I scanned my PC with Norton, McAfee, Spyware Doctor, Ad Aware, Avast Antivirus, Kaspersky Antivirus and many other but none of them found anything. Later I came across Malwarebytes Anti Malware software in download.com site. With a little hope I tried this one.

This malware is amazing. It found few infected registry entry and one infected sys file in my system. It deleted the infections. After restart everything started working fine.

Go to this website - http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and download this software. I am sure its a infection and it can be resolved by only and only this software.
