2 computers connection

OK this might be a dumb ask but i have no idea how to connect 2 computers.

what it is i have a desktop PC with a quad processor that i am using in folding @ home and i also have a laptop that i would like to connect to my internet and also to folding (nothing else)

i am using Devolo not a router to connect to the internet (my router got hacked once) so can i put a splitter in the Ethernet cable or will i need to buy another adapter from Devolo.

Any ideas are very welcome :confused

You could use a network switch or hub I personally would go for a switch as it keeps a record of the MAC addresses of the devices attached to it.
