I have an older computer with a intel Pentium 4 3GH running windows XP SP2. I was told that XP can only see 2G of memory and of course I hear this after I upgraded to 4G. So id the extra 2G not doing anything?

    Thanks,
    Houston

I'm sorry to say, but I am not sure either. The only thing I am aware of is the issue with Vista utilizing 3 gigs at present, but not truly the full amount of 4 gigs.
I wouldn't necessarily think it was a waste of money though, depending on what you are using your computer for.

I use photoshop all the time and run several programs all at once. So just because the OS doesn't support or utilize all te memory does not mean that the other programs can not then right?

    thanks,

That is how I understand it. I speak from experience. I used to have more RAM than the OS needed, but I did a lot of image processing and it surely did help me when I was doing that. I also though it helped downloading larger files from Internet.
In my book, you will not be disappointed. I did the same for my Dad's older Dell, and it made a real difference for what he does with his.

BTW: This is my all time favorite forum/site for tech matters. Lot of good people here who are willing to help. Sometimes it is good just to hear other people's opinions and perspectives too.

If the OS can not "see" all of the memory the programs WILL NOT be able to use it. The only memory that can be used by a program is the memory allocated to it by the OS.
