With the cd in the player, click on the icon. Does it give you any kind of error message, like 'incorrect function?' Do any of your other cds work? If not, you can try this...reboot your machine and go into your BIOS. Once there change your boot order to CDROM as first. While still in the BIOS put a bootable cd into the player (I use my OS installation cd). Hit esc, F10, and Y when the little box comes up. Your machine will reboot and when prompted, hit any key to boot from the cd. If the player is working, it should boot to whatever disc you put in. If not, take 2 aspirins and call me in the morning!! Sorry!! If it doesn't boot, then it may just be time for a new player. If it does boot and you still cannot play any of your other cds then there is most likely a hardware malfunction within the player itself, which means, more than likely, a new player. However, if your machine is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer for possible replacement. Good luck and let us know what happens!!

Pardon my ill mannered self!! Welcome to MGs!!!;)

Looks like it time for a new CD but try a cleaning disk first.

    Hey metallikittie :wave :p

    To the techies out there,
I know the thread starter and believe that she needs new drivers. It may have been corrupted during an uninstall of excess programs. I would not suggest sending her into BIOS and she does not have an original OS disk. She has already tried several other disks. The problem is with CD-Rom drive, not the CDs. We recently removed several programs while trying to get enough free space to defragment her hard drive and at least one of those was a codec pack. The problem with the CD-ROM started right after this. She's using and old laptop with only 1.5 GB on the hard drive. Her operating system is Windows Vista.

Can anyone suggest the proper method for driver updates and work through other possibilities like firmware or registry errors?

Good luck, metallikittie! The peeps here are wicked smart and if you're patient, they will get it working again.
It would help if you go into Device Manager, right-click on your CD-ROM and click properties. On the general tab (at the top) it will give the manufacture and model # of your device. Post it here. ;)

    Hi,

Tried the device manager are like mercury goddess has suggested there maybe a update driver under one of the tabs, if the unit still has the driver then it should still be able to install it and should be fine..unless windows is overiding it with a deafulat microsoft one that may not be appropriate but is the best match.

Can also check and see if you have a "system restore point" some where just before all the files were cleaned if you have then using this should get your pc purring again.

I had an issue with a dvd writer after removing nero ...expletive it would just completely dissappear!

You could also go to the maufacturers website and check out the model and get updates for it, it may also help repair the cd..if not and you dont find a fix for it. It is possible to network it up to another pc and share the working cd rom drive and copy the files across that way. its cheaper than spending a couple of hundred bucks nz (approx 140 US) on average for a laptop cd rom.

If thinking of buying parts for a laptop, good luck after two years of age, (thats why i dont own one) only hope if it is, could be second hand.
Also could potentialy buy a external usb cdwriter with usb port if your lucky quite cheap.

Good luck with this..Dont forget to check device manager if it has a yellow exclamation you could have trouble with drivers, windows doesnt always pick the best one and this can be a pain.

Well MercuryGoddess, I was not privy to the information you supplied about your friends machine. I only offered suggestions that could possibly determine a hardware error, or possibly a media error.

I know Stubby. ;) I didn't mean for it to sound like an attack. I just noticed that the OP didn't give much info and I wanted to add that for her sake, and for everyone trying to help as well. She may actually need to go into BIOS at some point to get this working again, however she would definitely need a step-by-step guide to do so. That was all I meant by that. :)
    Peace

No Mercury Goddess, I did not, at all perceive that as an attack. If anything, I shouldn't have been so blunt:eek: But you know, when you get to my age with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel I sometimes don't use the manners I should!!:cry Okay, now that that is over with, all I can say is...."GROUP HUG!!!!!!!!!!":-D
