I'm trying to find a good, simple, yet safe alternative to carrying around a DVD for data. Looking for something that should keep data as safe as possible, with the possibility of requiring a password to access.

Any suggestions? I was wondering about a 8 gig SD card, but I don't know if my computer will handle the High Density ones or not. I have two USB 2.0 ports built in the side of my case.

your computer will handle the high density SD cards just fine, you just have to make sure that you buy a compatible high density SD card reader.

    Hi MT

Could also use USB Pens as they come in large sizes at not too expensive a cost and can be encrypted useing TrueCrypt if needed.

I mention USB pens as they can in some designs of Pen be linked to a keychain which is a great way to know where they are, SD cards are so small they can be lost easily.... just a thought.

I didn't know there were USB Pens. Any recommended brands -- SD, Kingston, etc.? Commonly found between 8-16 gb or so?

    Hi MT

Yes Kingston, Corsair, OCZ plus other branded ones are good, just stear clear of generics. 8GB are fairly common these days, 16GB and 32gB not so much and tend to command prices in the $100+ range, some idea on prices

But another idea into the pot and due to me having two of them and just remembering this option is a USB Hard Drive, the Western Digital Passport drives are fairly small ( enough to fit into a pocket or bag ) and come in large sizes, dont need external power as they run off the PCs USB power supply.

TBH I would advise the WD Passports as best solution to storing data other than DVD, would be the way I would go and have done.

Excellent idea indeed. Thanks very much. I had forgotten about the WD HD.
