New motherboard; slower pc

    Hi all.

I've replaced my motherboard 2 days ago, from Intel D865GBF to MSI RS350M-ILSR (MS-7031). I installed the motherboard, but everything was running slower than before. I used to get steady 125 fps at quake 3, now I barely even get 100, and it sometimes drops even to 50-60. World in Conflict, became unplayable, even though before it was playable even on high details. It takes longer to install stuff etc. So I thought I should reformatt my pc. I formatted the system drive, did a clean windows install... and nothing. Hell, even the windows installation took like 2-3 times longer than before, especially the fomatting. ( I've only formatted the system drive, C, and didn't touch the others since I only keep games there). Movies or music are not lagging or anything like that. I, of course, installed the drivers I could find on msi website, even thought there were not too many. Checked my temperatures in everest too. I have Intel pentium 4 Prescott (478) CPU, so they are generally hot... but on the intel board it was under 50c in idle, now, while writing this post, its 59C... There are no hangs or freezes, just WAY lower perfomance, and I doubt that this motherboard could be THAT worse. So please, help me!
    My PC:
Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHZ Prescott on S478
    1024mb of ram
    ATI Radeon x1650 pro (512mb)
    320gb SATA Seagate hard drive
    MSI RS350M-ILSR (MS-7031)
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Cpu temperature while running q3 is around 64C. I guess it's ok for Prescott, but I'm not sure.

Motherboard chipset drivers may be the cause. Go to MSI and search for the "motherboard" drivers. At the moment you are probably suffering motherboard chipset and hardware recognition issues.

Always very good after installing a new HDD to to "defrag" it before you play.

I think it is the same board... So the only thing I can do, is buy a new cpu?
Also, I downloaded all the drivers I could find for the motherboard. There were only drivers for sound and graphics card, and network card, though. Bios is newest version.

No! Do not buy a LGA478 CPU, I think you are near the top of their range. It will be a complete waste of money in comparison to buying a LGA775 and associated hardware. Work with what you have or go a whole system upgrade. Otherwise the bang/dollar will be highly skewed towards a 775 rig and you will be stuck with expensive (arguably collectable) 478 hardware.

Well, I need the pc for net browsing, and I would also like to play some games. I mostly play q3 so I don't need any amazing pc, just used to run it at steady 125 fps and now its jumping between 60 and 100... Any other new games = slideshow ( like world in conflict, which was playable before...). So.. what do you suggest I should do? ( BTW, sorry for my english, it's not my first language).

Yea 64C is about standard for a Prescott.

Frankly I just checked a couple of online vendors and that don't stock 478 CPU's anymore:confused, so I think you are near the upper limit with your CPU.

You could add another 1Gb of RAM and possibly upgrade the Video Card but please be careful as it is older gear and may not be readily transferable to any new builds. I wouldn't spend to much money on improving it but would really consider saving for a new build.

with the compatibility issue it may be the root of the problem. also make sure you dont have any bent pins and that the heatsink is making good contact with chip(ie too much thermal paste or not enough)when gaming the chip may be clocking back due to excessive heat. 59c while typing is definately too hot.Just for giggles open the side of the case and blow a household fan in there and try a game . see if it makes any difference.

I agree with ibbonkers. I don't know if you know, but Intel has a throttling feature in their chips. When the chip detects high temperatures, it will automatically slow itself down to try and get the temps back down. Be glad you're not using AMD because they usually just fry (like when my brother forgot to put on the heatsink) grrr.

Hmmm, but the temperatures were even higher sometimes on the old board, and everything was working like a charm... ( even over 70c while gaming). But I will check the heatsink later, thanks for the suggestion. :)

Today I downloaded CoreCenter, which is diagnostic program for MSI motherboards I guess, it shows temperatures and stuff... Well, I checked the temps, and the IGP temp was around 100C! Maybe that's the cause for such a low system performance? Can someone tell me what an IGP is? Thanks in advance.

igp is onboard video. when you use an add on card you need to go into bios and shut off igp (integrated Graphics Port) what it sounds like is that your onboard is trying to render the game aswell as your add on which will slow the system down.

    Yep I agree with ibonkers.

    IGP is Integrated Graphics Processor.

Hmmm I see. I tried to look in BIOS, but couldn't find any option to turn of IGP. There was an option called Init Display First, which I could either choice OnChip VGA/AGP or PCI. I tried both, but no difference. Shouldn't the onboard card turn off automaticaly if it detects any other VGA card, though? =/
EDIT: I've uploaded the manual, maybe someone can find the option to turn off the IGP in there. =(
