Blank Screen on Startup

My son has a Toshiba Sattelite A135-S4464 with Vista Home. He's had it for a while, it's a few months out of warranty. When he starts the computer he gets the Toshiba Logo and then black screen with a dot but nothing works. The only keys that work are the Control ALT+DEL sequence.

I had him monitor the POST test. He hit the escape key as Toshiba logo comes up and can see the CPU test (passes) and the Hard drives and DVD drive are recognized. He doesn't get the Windows start up screen. it just kicks to this black screen. It looks like an old dos screen but he's not able to type anything.
