no sound after fn/backspace prompt win2000

I recently used the fn/backspace prompt and now cannot reinstate my sound on my thinkpad using win2000. I have checked all the settings in the control panel (sounds and multimedia) and it appears ok, but no sound. any suggestions?

 

Right click your Volume icon. Open the Volume Control.
Is anything muted?

Go to to Control Panel>System>Hardware tab> Device Manager>Sound, Video, and Game Controllers.
Are there any yellow ? or ! showing?

 

Thanks for the help. Nothing is muted and I don't see anything like ? or ! where you said to look.

 

Have you shut down your PC and restarted it since this happened?

 

both restarted and shutdown since it happened

 

Check that Windows Audio Service is started.
Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
Scroll down the list of services until you find the Windows Audio service.
Right click on it and choose Properties.
Make sure it is set to Automatic and Start is checked.

 

Did you try fn/backspace again?

I tried to reinstall my sound card. nothin has changed. any other suggestions would be appreciated....
