Tip # 35

URL addresses.

Never type http:// ......... .com , or http:// ......... .org, or http:// ......... .net again.

In current Browsers, like IE 7 and Firefox, just type in Camtech2000 (for example) in the address (URL) line
and then press CTRL+ENTER (at the same time). Auto complete will turn Camtech2000 into http://Camtech2000.com

A saving of 15 keystrokes, and a lot quicker.

Other combinations are:

Press SHIFT+ENTER will turn Camtech2000 (for example) into http://Camtech2000.net

Pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER will turn Camtech2000 (for example) into http://Camtech2000.org

I know you have Major Geeks already stored in "My Favourites" or "Bookmarks" but if your visiting a rarely used site, then these shortcuts come in very handy. Check out Microsoft and CTRL+ENTER, as another example.

This will save you heaps of typing. :-D

We upgraded system with around $450 worth memory, a brand new graphic card Radeon X1950 XTX that costs roughly $399, a Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 500GB 16MB SATA II drive that costs just over $200 and a CPU that costs around $270. What did we gain from Microsoft performance tool, just a lousy non realistic few points. Trust me Vista works much better with these new components, and $1300+ new hardware will really make a stand out difference. Unfortunately not according to this Microsoft performance tool.

Tip # 38 Part 5 of buying a Vista PC.

Reducing Hard Drive Partition size in Vista, to make room for another OS, or a Data partition, etc.

To reduce the size of your Vista partition, Orb (Start)--->Computer--->right click Select "Manage"--->"Disk Management"

Right click the Partition you want to make smaller in size. Select "Shrink Volume" Enter the new size in megabytes and click "Shrink".

Beware: This is for smaller only. Make sure you have backups of all your vital stuff in case something goes wrong.

Tip # 39 Which uninstaller to use in Windows. (XP)

I tried 3 different methods of removing programs from my XP Pro SP3 laptop.

1. Revo Uninstaller, on my laptop, finds, and lists, 221 installations for possible deletion on my laptop. Download at Major Geeks http://www.majorgeeks.com/Revo_Uninstaller_d5706.html
PS: Not listed for use in Vista. :cry

2. Windows Add / Remove tab (in Start-->Control Panel) only finds 163 entries.

3. CCleaner comes up last as it finds 150 entries only.

Enough said. :-D

Beware, Revo is very powerful especially if you use the #4 seach, and delete, option. Create a System point at least. Back up your PC as a precaution is probably a good idea, also until you gain confidence in using it.

Tip # 41 Create Autorun in your USB stick, etc., as Autorun.inf

1. Create a file in the ROOT directory of your Flash drive.
2. Open up Notepad, or your favourite Text editor.
3. Type in the following.
[autorun]
open=launch.bat
ACTION = Launch portable workspace

That's all and Save it as "autorun.inf".

Make sure it saves as "autorun.inf". MS has the happy habit of saving it as "autorun.txt" unless you awake to their default of *.txt.

4. Create a "launch.bat" file in the same place as "autorun.inf".
5. Open up launch.bat by selecting Edit.
6. Add a line for every app that you want be able to lauunch by itself.
7.start portablefirefox.exe
start portablethundefbird.exe
startportableopenoffice.exe
start ...................... etc.
8. Save it as Launch.bat, close it and your done.

I'd plug the PCU website (and download) but unless you join the "High Speed premium service" :cry you are restricted to a very slow "Standard" download speed. Stuff that. Download is around 670 megs in size and clipart is in *.png format.

I've installed it on an external hard drive (to save 670 megs on C:\) and had a look at some of the graphics.

If you are into war graphics there are lots of military stuff (some actual photos). Hummers, rifles, pistols, rockets being launched etc.

Click on Windows Task Manager, (Ctrl+Alt+Del in XP or Ctrl+Alt+Esc in Vista), then click on Processes tab, then click once or twice on CPU. This will sort CPU to Maximum usage down to Minimum usage or vice versa (It's up to your preference).

You will soon see what processes are hogging your CPU usage.

Tip # 49 System Restore size for XP

Start-->Control Panel---->System--->System Properties--->System Restore---> Settings--> Disk Space usage.

Move slider back from right to left and leave it around 3000 megs (= 3 gigs).
Actual percentage will vary according to your hard drive size.
For example, 3% on a 60 gig hard drive = 1.8 gigs approx,
whereas 3% on a 320 hard drive equals +9.6 gigs approx.

MOST IMPORTANT: This setting DOES NOT stick. If you clear out your old Restore points (and then turn them on again, later) , then MS helpfully resets your System Restore BACK TO 15% and you have to do it all over again. :cry

Tip # 50 Synchronise 2 folders using a simple batch file. No need for FREE or $$$ Software

Synchronise 2 folders across 2 PC's, or drives, or partitions.
For example, I synchronise my c:\Downloads Folder from one drive to an external hard drive (T:\Downloads). doh :-D
Thanks to Mada_Milty for stirring my grey matter.
The important part of this Batch file is the /ekidcy at the end. For explanations of these codes if you need it, type in xcopy /? <enter> in Start-->Run---> cmd, for the full listing of codes.

Create a Batch file, call it synchro.bat, or your choice, (make sure MS doesn't "help" you out by saving it as a TXT file, or it won't work)
Copy and paste as follows:-

@echo off
rem Example only. Modify to your needs.
echo Copying latest Downloads from C:\Hard drive to T:\ External drive.
rem Substitute your path from /to, in the line above, and below.
xcopy "C:\Downloads\*.*" "T:\Downloads*.*" /ekidcy
echo File Transfers finished
pause
exit

Make sure you have 4 quotes (") in the xcopy line AND a space between the 2nd and 3rd quotes and a space after the 4th quote.

First time you run it may / will take ages. After the first run, it is very quick. I use variations to keep my 2 downloads Folders in sync. and also to sync 2 iPod music folders on different hard drives. No need for a commercial program when a batch file will do.

You can add / substitute extra lines like xcopy "C:\Documents and Settings\*.*" T:\Documents and Setting\*.*" /ekidcy in the same Batch file
and this will synchro the Folder from one drive to another.

My recommendation is to add this line to the above batch file as it is a quick incremental backup of lots of your important stuff under the C:\Documents and Setting Folder which might include My Documents, My Pictures, My Music, All Users, etc., depending on how your PC Folders are setup. Remember first run might / will take ages. After that it is fairly quick if you run it daily.
