dvd burner not working

i have an internal dvd burner for my desktop and for some reason it's not burning dvd disks all the way (both dvd-r and dvd+r) after i start a burn (burning an image or just data) it will stop 1/4 or just half way into the process i know it's not the software being used because i use the same software on other computers

i know it can't be the drive because i have been disconnecting it from my computer so i can burn a dvd on another (quite a long process but it works) so there has to be something wrong with my computer not the drive how can i make it work again

could it be a virus
