If I have the D975XBX2 motherboard (has an on-board LAN controller?) will this work? I also have a wireless card already installed (all were working properly until yesterday... and I don't know if I did anything to change that). I'd happily buy a $30 part if it meant avoiding computer hell.

Yes your motherboard does have onboard LAN controller, and drivers are here http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filt...4&submit=Go%21 just need to choose your Windows version to get the download list, I would if you're having driver issues and in Device Manager you have yellow ! marks by any device to install the Intel Chipset driver first, then install the LAN driver.
