    i have D-LInk DI-704p ethernet broadband router
i have contacted d-link and have the newest firmware
what i need to do is configure this so me and my son can play games and or host games through this router
right now we disconnect the router because people cannot join our hosted games is there a link to the ports that need to be open for particular games or do i need to configure the router more by assigning ip addresses and such.
with the router as it is now both puters can access the internet just cant host games
also does this router stop files from downloading as i get to 99% and it starts to transfer from temp location to final save spot and it stops
thnx in advance for any response

Most multiplayer games will have the ports that need to be open on their support site.

Also, on Linksys we have a setting called DMZ which forwards all ports to a certain machine. I host games and use this setting during that time and it works great.

What game, what port are you using? Is it UDP? Are you running a firewall on the router, or a software firewall elsewhere?

The 99% thing is your computer, the file is getting to you computer just fine, but when the file is copied then it crashes thats not the network.

    the game is Vietcong
i dont know what port is being used or if its open or what
as long as i dont have the router hooked up it all works good
other games is my son has are
    icewindale II
    pool of radiance
    baldurs gate
I have windows XP pro with a built in firewall but this is disabled in order to host games
I have no software firewall installed
I have DSL srevice for internet connection
I guess the things that are most confusing are---static IP or dynamic IP, WAN ip ,WAN subnet mask ,WAN gateway
i dont know which of these pertain to me or not ,
D-link will not help at all because it is not their job to configure my computers only that their product works

I think you may have to edit the access control lists (ACL) for the router, which are basically just IP addresses and ports that are authorized to pass through the router. Hopefully, you have a manual of some sort for the router you have, and can look up how to find and edit the access control list for your router. If not, you may have to contact the vendor for support. Once you know how to edit the access control lists, you'll need to find out what ports need to be open for the games in question. To find that out... I'd take Adrynalyne's advice and find the game's support site. Hope I helped some...
