Question missing system and lsass.exe errors

Hi
I have been given a friends laptop to try to help her out as she is totally computer illiterate.

First it said windows/system32/config/system was missing, so I managed to repair that by using repair console putting system, software, sam, security, and default in temp folder and renaming to .bak, then deleting these files and then copying them back.

I could then start to reboot into safe mode, however I then got lsass.exe - system error an invalid parameter was passed to a service or function.

I then went back into recovery and went into the second repair option (after the installation screen) it got passed collecting info, dynamic update, preparing insallation then rebooted and now the lsass.exe message comes up again, and when i click ok it reboots to restarting setup.

any help appreciated

Melissa

Did you try a chkdsk while in recovery console?

Unfortunately no and now I cannot get into RC as on startup it just says restarting setup and goes to the installation step, then the lsass error pops up.

Both solutions assume that you have an XP CD and not an OEM CD.This looks to be the hard way

This looks to be easier...I'm quoting someone's post. The person he was helping had the lsass.exe error and it solved the problem.

...the easiest thing to do is just reinstall windows into the same directory.

When you boot from your XP CD, choose the option to install. Then choose the option to re-install Windows. Do not install to a new directory. When the system comes up, you will have lost your restore points, but they've NEVER helped me anyway. While installing windows, it will ask you to create your system users. For now, we are going to create a random user just to get your PC running again. Don't strain your brain trying to come up with a user name. You can use any old name, but DON'T use the name of any of your users. When the system comes up....reboot. Now, when your computer boots, you'll be taken to the login screen. Login as your original user name (the one you had trouble with) and go to the users settings under the control panel. From there, you can delete the random profile you just created when setting up windows.

Hi
Thanks for your reply.

I have followed the microsoft kb article to recover from the system problem.

I then started to do a repair of the installation, and that is my problem now. I cannot get past the installation screen as the lsass error pops up.

Every time I reboot (with or without the CD) I only get restarting setup, then the error.

I cannot even reinstall as the CD will not boot to the original options (repair, setup etc)

I am at a loss now of what to try next.

Regards Melissa

You need to go into the BIOS and make sure that the CD is selected as the first boot device. From your description, it sounds like the computer is trying to boot from the hard drive because you would not get the login error when booting from a CD.

Hi Plodr
Thanks for all your help.
managed to boot from cd, then it asked for admin password, as far as I know there isn't one as it let me in before.

I've now given up repairing and reinstalled completely.

regards melissa
