    I am a newbie.
I'm trying to hook my old hard drive (maxtor 80 gb ata/ 133 hdd) up to my new computer (dell inspiron 530). I'm using an external enclosure with a usb 2.0 connection. The problem is that when everything is connected, the hdd doesn't show up in 'my computer'. It does show up in the device manager as 'maxtor usb device' or something like that, however. I don't see it on the disk manager either.
I think my hard drive is bad. This is why I have a new computer anyway. If someone could give me some pointers, it would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure to check the drive's 'jumper' block. It should be jumpered as a Master device.

I tried all of the possible jumper positions, and I still get the same result. My HDD is probably dead, right?
