Is there a way to authenticate using FTP w/o having to connect to the ftp server using some randomly generated port? The last thing i want is to put my server on dmz. Or are there any good alternatives to FTP besides having a speical webpage to upload files and such? thanks

Generally, you can hide your FTP server by changing the listening port to something other than 21. Any port over 1024 will do. Just be sure to configure your clients correctly.

The only alternative to FTP I've used is IRC fserving. You create a channel with a passkey, and then you install an fserve script (such as SysReset). But you still have to open up ports, generally, just like an FTP server if you want to send. There are ways around that, but they get very technical.

The most secure way would be to put the FTP server on a dedicated machine, and then put that server in the DMZ.
