Was surfing away and MS Antispyware 2009 magically appeared, there was no "x" to get rid of it, so I logged off via the boot-up switch. This MS-A 2009"pop-up" appeared after I tried to watch a movie online. Must be a connection. Now I am not able to logon, as the pc goes through a continual logon/logoff loop - even in SAFE MODE...any safe mode selection that is on the safe mode menu. Please help, I am extremely pc-challenged. Thanks :)

If you are now being looped back on your login screen, it means that userinit.exe file has been deleted, infected or corrupted or the registry keys associated with it may have been deleted or corrupted. Have you tried logging into safe boot mode? if that does not work then you will need to do the below:

Thanks for the response. I am so lame, I don't even know what the OEM business is. However, I googled away and found a response that said if you had Windows XP preinstalled, by the manufacturer, you probably have OEM. The Microsoft link you sent to me does not give an alternative repair if you have OEM. Which is pretty lame on MS part, in that they do not give alternative instructions. I might assume MOST people had Windows XP preinstalled.

The instructions state: Warning! Do not use the procedure that is described in this article if your computer has an OEM-installed operating system. The system hive on OEM installations creates passwords and user accounts that did not exist previously. If you use the procedure that is described in this article, you may not be able to log back into the recovery console to restore the original registry hives.

It appears, no matter what, I need a Windows XP CD, which I do not have and don't want to pay a zillion dollars for. What do you suggest?

    Thanks again!

You will need to post in the software forum and have someone guide you thru this procedure. It is possible to run the procedure I linked you to on OEM system, but without a disc you will need to do a slave drive hook up or a Linux/Knoppix boot CD or even UBCD4Win, which someone would have to instruct you in how to do.

We need a bootable system to be able to help you with malware removal.
