Well... here's a good link... though if you're on 56k, you're gonna hate loading this page everytime you visit:

    http://www.networkmagazine.com

I'm a student at ITT Tech in a Computer Networking course... and have some good books I could recommend... but I suggest first searching the internet, as it's cheaper ;)

The first step in learning computer networking is probably to set one up. You need two computers. Two network interface cards, or built in connections. (Use Cat.5, forget thinnet). A network hub. A 4 or 5 port hub will work fine. Two NIC cards and a hub can be purchased a Wal-Mart for about $50. Including cables. Routers are more expensive, but will be needed if you plan to use Cable or DSL service. (Some ISP's provide free routers with a service sign-up).
After you get your two computers connected, and read all the MS help materials, you should have a local area network up and running is a day or two. You can always post here to get help.
Then, go to your local book store and find titles on TCP/IP. That is where to begin.
