    Networking Frustrations!!!

I have my PC connected directly to my linksys wireless routher with 4 port switch. Everything works great!!!

Downstairs, I have a laptop with a cisco aironet 340 card and randomly, after either coming out of hibernation or starting up the laptop, I lose my internet connection.

After doing "IPCONFIG" I get an error message saying that the "DHCP server is unreachable..."

I found an article on the microsoft sight about "Automatic IP addressing" ( http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;244268) . It sounded like it applied, so I made the fix... Everything was great for a few days, but now I am back to square one...

According to the wireless card, I am associated to my router. Checking the router, I see that my laptop is not in the DHCP clients table. So I don't know if it is a laptop thing or a router thing or maybe something else!?!

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    thanks,

have you tried testing it with a static IP?

Have you checked for updated drivers for your WiFi card?

Have you checked for firmware updates for your WiFi router?

    thanks for your reply.

I have the most recent firmware for both the router and the wireless card...

Tried using a Static IP and it seems to work. Although, I'd really like to use DHCP, if I can, especially, if someone brings a laptop or pda to the network, DHCP is so much easier....

    Any ideas?

once it goes into hibernation it turns off the NIC.. hence no renew of DHCP. The only few things I could think of were
    1. Don't let your NIC turn off
    2. Try renewing your IP IPCONFIG / RENEW
    3. Disable your connection and then re-enable it

not sure how to not let the NIC turn off...

But, I tried doing a IPCONFIG / RENEW and that's where I get the "Cannot Find DHCP Server" message...

Tried diabling and renewing, but it doesn't seem to help...

I am going to see if Linksys can offer any insight...

Ended up moving everyting to static IP for the time being...

    thanks for your help...

Realistically, all you need to do is put your WiFi machine on static. Give it 192.168.0.100, or some other IP so high that DHCP won't touch it.

    Windows XP?

What operating system do you have? If you have Windows XP, the option to keep the NIC card from turning off to save power... is under network connections. Find network connections in the control panel (or wherever) and right click on the local area connection, your NIC card, and go down to properties. Then hit the configure button. Go to the Resources tab and there's your two measily check boxes that may be the cause of your problem. Here's a visual aid:

The OS's should be somewhat similar... but in any case, hope you're coming along with your troubleshooting of the problem.

T-Rex was very close on those 2 check boxes. In 2k there is also a 'Power Management' tab on the properties page of the nic. That is where the 2 check boxes live. Hope this helps, and good luck.
