Default An invention that could change the internet for ever

A new search engine is about to be released, thats being called the internet's Holy Grail.

Quote:
Computer experts believe the new search engine will be an evolutionary leap in the development of the internet. Nova Spivack, an internet and computer expert, said that Wolfram Alpha could prove just as important as Google.
Quote:
For those of us tired of hundreds of pages of results that do not really have a lot to do with what we are trying to find out, Wolfram Alpha may be what we have been waiting for."
Time will tell

Read about this the other week WW, and never got to dig deeper and still have not had time, but this would be an interesting development if they get the amount of computing power and engine to do all they say, its been tried in the past IIRC by Ask Jeeves, in which you ask a question in plain english and get best fit, dunno if it was sucessful at all.

Clustering engine searchs are seeming to be the best ones of late as they catagorise your search, so you can narrow down and remove items you dont want or at least drill down the branches over having to tailor your search question or use advanced options.

Would love to try out an alpha or beta of this.

Supposed to come out in one form or another this month according to CNet and apparently only for science types at first. Better be better than 'Ask Jeeves'.

Science talk for not developed yet, still in lab as theoretical in seriousness the engine (as well as data spider) is going to have to be not only damm quick but ultra accurate to cope with the variables in a users search, and to have 1000 staff monitoring quality, seems a small amount compaired to the amount of data that will be on the net.

Quote:
Dr Wolfram, an award-winning physicist who is based in America, added that the information is "curated", meaning it is assessed first by experts. This means that the weaknesses of sites such as Wikipedia, where doubts are cast on the information because anyone can contribute, are taken out.
Hope they have alot of freetime to do this, even wikipedia likely has enough data to keep 1000s of experts in various fields busy for years making sure its accurate.

Still curious to see how this pans out as it could be a monumental failure or best thing since the invention of the WWW
