I'm a Win98 OS and have been for some time. I've recently had to reinstall the OS and start from scratch. I also have an old SimCity Classic for 95. It was installed on my Win95 OS and my Win98 OS (over the years I've reinstalled the OS several times). In any event, SimCity Classic has always installed properly and functioned well (though note: my recollections indicate that when an OS was reinstalled, SimCity Classic was always reinstalled early in the game). Now, with the recent reinstall, I've tried to install SimCity Classic to no avail and get the following error ... "Insufficient memory or disk space." Needless to say I'm fine with memory and disk space as its the same as I've had in the past when SimCity Classic worked fine. I know Simcity Classic is somewhat dated but I've always like it along with nostalgia. I've checked various settings like files & buffers in config.sys and they seem to be OK. Folks, any ideas???

You need to make sure that you've gotten rid of ALL the previous Sim City files. Using just ADD/Remove doesn't always get rid of all the files. The same thing happened to me with, of all games, the Sims. I eventually erased my hard drive and started over. I erased the hard drive for totaly different reasons but what I realized from doing that is that all the previous installed files of the Sims were gone. I re-installed the game without any problems.
I too had an unusuall error message when trying to re-install the game. So... just make sure you get rid of all the previous files. That's my advice. If that doesn't work then I don't know what to do. |

Also, when you said you re-installed your OS did you re-install it over top of a previous installation or did you format (erase) your hard drive and then intall your OS again? As for the memory thing... it might have something to do with your virtual memory set to high. I'm no pro. Just trying to help.

Thanks for your response. My OS was completely reinstalled from scratch -- reformat and then OS applied. So there are no remnants of DLL files or the similar in the c:\Windows directory. I appreciate your advice nevertheless. I'm up for further suggestions. Its got to be something stupid. Everything else on my system is fine and SimCity Classic has always functioned and installed fine before with the same configuration. But your mention of Virtual Memory I found curious -- what further do you think about this?

Hm. It might be that SimCity Classic wants Expanded (vs Extended) memory. Does your config.sys file load EMM386.SYS?
I'm not sure how much of an update Classic was... I'm not sure if it still has the DOS core or not. Also, does the program install successfully? Or is the error created during the install process?

The program DOES NOT install at all as I get the error first thing during the installation process -- it reads the CD, I get the spash screen and then the error. I'm not sure of a DOS core on the Classic edition but the CD is labeled 1997 and has instructions for Win3.1, 95 and MAC. The following are my settings for the Config file ...
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:OFF DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS DOS=HIGH,UMB,AUTO rem - By Windows Setup - DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CPQIDECD.SYS /D:IDECD001 FILESHIGH=80 BUFFERSHIGH=40,4 FCBSHIGH=10 SWITCHES=/F Additionally, I'm a Win98 Upgrade user (Upgrade CD not the full install) which means when I have to reinstall the system I first must start with the 95 base and then go to the upgrade. I think in the past, when I've done so, I might have installed SimCity Classic before upgrading to Win98. Also, I have several other titles in the series like SimCopter, SimTower, etc. and they installed fine (but are later editions than 1997). Any input is appreciated. |
