hi my computer stopped working just a day ago. It freezes at the startup screen. I've been using this comp for almost 6 yrs now.

it gets stuck on the main processor page. I have tried hitting DEL and F8 and it does nothing! :(

    please help.

this is what i see on the screen:

Phoenix - Award WorkstationBIOS v6.00PG, An Energy Star Ally

By far not my area of expertise, you may have a corrupt C.M.O.S (Copper.Metal.Oxide.Semiconductor (if i remember correctly)) battery, looks a bit like a silver button usually lying flat on the motherboard.

Try unplugging the unit and switching on and off the system just once to get rid of any residual charge held in the capacitors and then, popping out the cmos battery and pressing the start button on and off for about 20 - 30secs or even leaving the CMOS battery out overnight before reinstalling. Careful these are sensitive to static electricity so dont leave it on the carpet.

They dont teach you that in geek school but i have some success with units that dont post correctly using this method. Not a gauranteed fix but part of the trouble shooting tasks..

    Good luck with this one:wave

    Hey there,

Glad to be of some assistance.

Yes it sounds like you may have a flat cmos, they last about 4 or 5 years some longer so say it would be about time to replace it.

One clue is if your time and date is incorrect, which is a sign of a failing cmos, infrequently time and date may be wrong until the cmos fails outright. Another clue is at start up if there is an issue .. usually asking for you to use default settings or access the bios..

Anyway, glad to have saved you some $ - happy computing:wave
