Will using a cell as modem drain its battery faster than normal?
Is it safe or necessary to use cell battery charger while tethered by usb to desktop? (Browsing time longer than cell battery capability.)
    Thanx

Yes. When traveling, I use the cell tethered to the laptop or connected via Bluetooth. I found battery drain depended on upload/download. Just being logged on had little or no effect. Using bluetooth was slightly heavier on the battery.

Nothing unsafe about it :) Done this for years. Specially if one intends to browse longer than the battery would last. Infact, the last few cells I owned, had an option to charge when connected via the USB cable. I left this enabled.

Now if you're wondering, on the detrimental effect on the battery - I can't say. Sure you will probably use up recharge cycles, but at least one's work gets done..

    Cheers.. :)
