Okay so I know there is a way to connect computers that are on the same network so they can have a shared folder. Will this work if my desktop is getting internet via an ethernet cable and my netbook is getting internet from the wireless system? They're both university internet but would it be considered the same network? And if so, how would i go about actually connecting them?

In a situation like this, you'd probably be better off using an FTP client/server type of setup, or setup an online storage for yourself like a SkyDrive through Windows Live. It's free and secure and can be password protected. Some good info about FTP servers along with some suggestions can be found here, many others can be found here at Major Geeks. Here's some freeware suggestions:

I'm no expert with FTP, but from my limited experience with it, you can set it up so you browse certain folders (or drives) from any PC, and you can secure it with passwords and/or encryption to keep your stuff safe and private. You'll probably need to research it a bit on your own.....
Good luck! I hope this helps! :-D
